it's only saturday morning and so far the restaurant resolution has been followed not once but twice already. thursday night i went to a little hole-in-the-wall in ravenswood called sabor a cuba, which, not surprisingly, served up some cuban dishes that were to die for. i started out with guava & cheese empanadas - which i would gladly eat every day for the rest of my life, thank you very much - and for dinner ordered one of the signature dishes, the ropa vieja. i took a taste off everyone's plate (all seven of them) and was impressed with everything. even though it's kind of in the middle of nowhere, i recommend it. but only if you bring me back an empanada.
last night, roommates and i went to maza, a lebanese place in lincoln park. roommates had been there before and clearly wanted to treat me to a romantical evening out, because this place was quiet, dimly lit and very intimate. the food was incredible and very reasonably priced. the owner is the only server, so getting our food and bill took longer than usual, but that only added to the mediterranean character of the place. follow that up with free dessert and you've got three happy (and very full) campers.
deliciously smooth houmos with super-hot grilled pita to start
the tables are simply dressed with tea lights and tiny jars of fresh roses
my lovely dates
mixed grill kebob - chicken, beef and lamb served with grilled tomato and onion and couscous
someone insisted on a "get me eating!!" picture
this was at the end of the night - when we arrived every table was full
OH i forgot - both restaurants are byob. now are you gonna go?!
